Cradle Mountain is a spectacular peak, its jagged appearance formed by the glaciers that gouged and sculpted it into the shape of a baby's cradle some 10,000 years ago. It rises to 5,100 feet (1,554 meters) above sea level and dominates the north of the Cradle Mountain–Lake St. Clair National Park. At the park's southern end lies Lake St. Clair, Australia's deepest natural freshwater lake.
The Overland Track that Mountain to Lake St. Clair is one of Australia’s best-known bush trails an from all over the world. The track is 50 miles (80 kilometers) long and takes about 5 days to to complete. It winds through breathtaking scenery-rugged mountains, ancient pine forests, and alpine plains, passing icy streams and still, glacial lakes on the way. There are also plenty of shorter bush walks around Lake St. Clair that take just a few hours.
