Caribbeans Family Vacations

Family Vacations in Grenada

An Island for All ages

With family-friendly accommodations, reef-sheltered beaches for swimming and snorkeling, and ecoactivities from gentle walks through a rainforest to heart-thumping rides down a racing river, Grenada and its sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique offer myriad ways families can bond around new experiences.

Its pristine environment—one ninth of the land is nature preserves—along with a low crime rate and welcoming culture add to the appeal for families. A small island, Grenada offers an intimate, natural experience with an emphasis on water sports and eco-adventures rather than the clanging video game rooms so prevalent in mass-market destinations.

Many restaurants offer children's menus and almost all will accommodate picky young eaters. At the Dodgy Dock Restaurant & Lounge Bar, a playground and children's menu satisfy young kids while adults enjoy Caribbean and Mexican cuisine overlooking the bay. For those who prefer dining in, there are villas and self-catering properties such as Flamboyant Hotel and Blue Horizons Garden Resort. Some properties offer free accommodations for children plus discounted or free meal plans and adjoining rooms. When parents want some adult time, the Spice Island Beach Resort's Nutmeg Pod provides organized activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for children aged 3 (if potty trained) to 12. The Rexplorers! Kids Club at the Grenadian by Rex Resorts opens 9 a.m. to noon and 1p.m. to 4 p.m. by reservation. The igh new Mount Cinnamon property also offers children's activities. Both Blue Horizons Beach Resort and True Blue Bay Resort & Villas welcome small children with playgrounds. Babysitters are easily arranged, especially at the larger hotels.

Some island dive shops stock kid-size scuba equipment and offer pre-dive pool programs for children as young as eight; children ten and up can be fully certified in kid-friendly classes.

Jeep tours and guided hikes offer a chance to swim at the base of a waterfall, or a soak in a natural hot spring. Kids enjoy watching for Mona monkeys, lizards and other creatures as they go.

Youngsters eight years and older can thrill to tubing down a swirling river or paddling a clear-bottom kayak over a coral reef. Even those as young as two years old can ride along on a guided open-boat tour around the island. Safety seats must be reserved in advance.

Cultural attractions add an educational value to a Grenada vacation. Touring one of the island's working plantations offers insight into the origins of vanilla, nutmeg and other spices. Grenada’s African heritage comes alive with traditional drumming, dance an African games at Belmont Estat a 300-year-old working farm that also features a petting zoo and a monkey.

From January to March, whale watching cruises go out in search of humpback whales; pilot and spej whales can be seen off Carriacou year-round. From mid April to June, it's often possible to join a night tour to watch leatherback turtles lay their eggs in protected areas, an awe-inspiring experience that your clients are sure to talk about for years to come.

UNIQUELY GRENADIAN ATTRACTIONS FOR ALL YOUR CLIENTS

Whether your clients are traveling to Grenada for a wedding, a honeymoon, a family vacation, an eco-adventure or to go diving or sailing, suggest they include at least one or two days to enjoy some of the island's other attractions. A visit to an historic spice estate is a must to appreciate the essence of the "Spice Island," and timing a visit to coincide with a lively Grenadian festival will further enhance the experience. And of course, they'll have opportunities to sample the island's cuisine and shop for local crafts and spices.
