Coral Coast

Coral Coast

The Coral Coast has been a popular holiday destination for many years. It was one of the first areas in Fiji to be developed for tourism, with a number of large hotels and smaller accommodation options. Located on the south-western side of the main island of Viti Levu, it is easily accessed from the coastal Queen's Highway that runs between Nadi and Suva. The beaches vary along this coastline.

The meandering road along the Coral Coast east from Sigatoka Town hugs the coastline for almost thirty kilometres with spectacular scenery along the way. There's a fine view from the roadside overlooking the peaceful Sovi Bay just beyond Malevu Village. There’s plenty of roadside parking and you can scramble down the rocks to the grey sandy beach for a walk but with unpredictable currents, swimming is not advisable here. On the far side of the bay is the pretty village setting of Vatukarasa, flanked by two handicraft shops. Both have good quality wares and reasonable prices and if you ask the shop attendants you should be able to organize a walk around the village paying a small donation to your guide. The roadside layby after the bridge on the Suva side of the village is a good spot for taking photos. At Korolevu, a dirt road running parallel to the grass runway leads inland for five kilometres through lush tropical forest to Biausevu Village . From the village, where you pay an $8 entry fee, there’s a forty- five minute relatively flat trail which crosses over a small stream half a dozen times and ends at the pretty Savunamatelaya Waterfall where you can swim and jump off the surrounding rocks.

Nine kilometres beyond Korolevu, the village of Navatulevu hails in the province of Serua and the political division between Western and Central Fiji . From here on, the Queens Road cuts inland to climb over steep hills draped in thick rainforest. On the first ascent, a small road leads to Mango Bay Resort with a beach backed by incredibly tall coconut palms.

There’s another pretty beach with good snorkelling at Namagumagua, accessed down a four kilometre dirt road signposted to The Wellesley Resort, ten kilometres further along the highway. For a wonderful view of this mountain scenery, take yet another dirt road signposted towards Waidroka Bay Resort at the 69km roadside marker, and go past the Dogowale Radio Station track, turning left on Retreat Road . Walk up the first steep driveway on your left for a panoramic lookout - you can keep on walking for ten minutes up to the tower but the views at the top are sometimes obscured by long grass.
