Revitalizing Spas

Revitalizing Spas in Tahiti

Spas in French Polynesia

The islands of French Polynesia have often been called the world's largest out-door spa—and with good reason. After all, you can soak your tired muscles in a surrounding of clear mountain streams and soothe your skin with local monoi oil. In addition, the gentle afternoon rains will put the best Vichy shower to shame.

Sheraton Tahiti

This hotel's Mandara Spa is the smallest spa in the islands, but for many newly arrived tourists it's the most important. "Ninety percent of my clients have just arrived after a seven-hour flight from Los angeles, want to get over their jet lag and tout to see the Paul Gauguin Museum or take a four-wheel-drive tour." A coconut oil massage painted in warm earth tones helps. The two suites adjacent to the hotel gym have balconies and small gardens over-looking the ocean. There are twin massage tables and jacuzzis full of freshly cut jasmines.

Hilton Moorea Lagoon and Spa

This Sheraton offers a Mandara Spa menu that is one-third Balinese, one-third European and one-third local Indigenous treatments rely on native ingredients like coconut milk, ginger, vanilla beans, tiare flowers and grapefruit. The most popular treatment is the sunburn cooler, which starts with a lavender body wash and finishes with aloe vera and tea tree oil wrap. It's a hydrating treatment, perfect for people who were in the sun a little too long.

Intercontinental Moorea Resort and Spa

Set in a forested corner, the Helene Spa is one of only two independent spas in the islands. The spa is a naturalist's delight—a rambling affair of palm-thatched fare (indigenous huts) and bamboo-ribbed walkways that seem to float across flower gardens. It is possible, in the space of a few footsteps, to find yourself lost in a magical labyrinth of shaded trees, dancing pools and creaking walkways.

Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa

This two-story center is perched on a ridge high above the resort, and overlooks both the sheer basalt face of Mt. Otemanu and the azure lagoon below. The view is one of the things guests like most about the spa. One of the most popular requests is to have a sunset massage for two in the open-air pavilions.By far the most popular treatment is the Mandara massage—an 80-minute treatment where two therapists work their way through a combination of five styles—Japanese Shiatsu, Thai, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Swedish and Balinese.

Bora Bora Lagoon Resort

The newest in the islands, Bora Bora Lagoon Resort's Maru Spa is popular both for its unique architecture and broad menu. The highlight of the five room Maru Spa (maru is Polynesian for "soft and gentle") is a pair of treatent rooms suspended two stories off the ground in the majestic branches of caoutchouc trees. The Maru Spa specializes in Balinese and local treatments. If you want a traditional monoi oil massage, this is the place to get it.

Le Tahaa Private Island

Situated in the shade of a coconut grove between a small lake and the turquoise lagoons, Le Taha’a Manea Spa is the perfect setting for those seeking out an oasis of serenity and absolute well-being. The spa is built from natural materials in pure Polynesian style consisting of twin massage rooms beside the lake, a double massage room with jacuzzi with a view of the lake as well as a double open-air Vichy-shower (a shower taken reclining on a table as water jets play along the length of the body). The spa is built to merge in perfect harmony with its motu environment yet without sacrificing luxury and privacy.
