Tahiti - Climate
As Tahiti lies in the tropics, the climate is warm almost year-round. There are roughly two seasons: hot and rainy from November to April, with average temperatures ranging from 72°F to 90°F (22-32°C), and relatively cool and dry from May to October, with temperatures between 64°F and 72°F (18-22°C). The temperature decreases with altitude; in the cool season, nighttime temperatures on Mount Orohena can even drop to the freezing point.
The climate of Tahiti is tempered by cooling breezes from the sea. In the hot season, the prevailing winds are the northeast trade winds. In the cool season, it is the strong southeast trade wind, called maraamu ("mahrah-AH-moo"), that dominates. A mountain wind called hupe ("HOOpay") blows down onto the plain in the evening.
Rainfall is erratic, with Papeete recording an average of 73 inches (185 cm) yearly. The northeast trade winds bring the most rain, and Papenoo, in the northeast, receives twice as much rain as Punaauia on the western coast. Devastating floods are frequent in the Papenoo Valley during the rainy season. The mountainous region in the center of the island also receives much rain. Most rain falls from December to March. Humidity is high throughout the year, reaching 98% during the hotter months.- Tahiti can also be hit by cyclones, which occur from January to March.
